Review: Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes

In this poignant, hilarious and deeply intimate call to arms, Hollywood's most powerful woman, the mega-talented creator of Grey's Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder and Catch, reveals how saying YES changed her life - and how it can change yours too.

With three hit shows on television and three children at home, Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say no when invitations arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No.

And to an introvert like Shonda, who describes herself as 'hugging the walls' at social events and experiencing panic attacks before press interviews, there was a particular benefit to saying no: nothing new to fear.
Then came Thanksgiving 2013, when Shonda's sister Delorse muttered six little words at her: You never say yes to anything.

Profound, impassioned and laugh-out-loud funny, in Year of Yes Shonda Rhimes reveals how saying YES changed - and saved - her life. And inspires readers everywhere to change their own lives with one little word: Yes.

Review: Oh how I loved this book. I actually ended up getting this one on audiobook, just because I saw that it was read by the author and I love that so I decided to download it. This book was exactly what I was expecting, exactly what I needed to read at the time and then some! The fact that the audiobook is read by Shonda Rhimes herself was just wonderful. I felt like she was preaching to me and chatting to me over a glass of wine all at the same time and it was marvellous.

This book was also completely relate. It is so easy to live in our comfort zones, not allowing ourselves to take risks. If it ain't broke don't fix it right? I had a bit of an experiment with my own year of yes and taking risks and it's the year that I started this blog, got to meet loads of amazing people, including my husband, and also progressed in my job, so I could definitely relate to this. She talks about motherhood and the challenges that that brings, how mothers are never doing the right thing according to everyone else. She talks about the difficulty in celebrating your success with others, and she covers choosing to live a healthier lifestyle and not just accept the extension belt on the plane!

Obviously this book was going to be incredibly well structured and well-written, it is coming from the writer of Thursday night TV! But this book just had me gripped whilst I was reading it, I loved escaping into her world, sitting back and listen to her tell me all about it. The narration was great and there are speeches she has given added in throughout the book which I think definitely give it even more impact. This book also made me laugh, it made me nod along in agreement and of course it made me want to continue to say YES! Shonda Rhimes is with me and I am going to make sure that I continue to say yes!
